Tweets, texts and other technology: Teens invited to discuss the pros and cons of growing up in a cyber-savvy world

Teens between the ages of 13-17 are invited to an event on June 29 featuring dinner and conversation – the face-to-face kind – to talk about the pros and cons of growing up in a world filled with tweeting, texting and other technology.

The program is a partnership between Indiana Humanities and The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

Called “TMI: A #chewonthis for the cyber-savvy generation” teen facilitators will guide small groups through an informal conversation (that will also be “reported” on social media by another teen). Parents will not be allowed to participate. Following the conversation, DJ Obi Wan will provide music.

“The amount of technology available to adults – much less teens – can sometimes be overwhelming,” said Keira Amstutz, president and CEO of the Indiana Humanities. “We hope this event inspires them to have a meaningful discussion about the challenges and opportunities their generation faces because of this unprecedented access to technology.”

Chew on This is a program designed by Indiana Humanities that uses the power of food as a convener of people and catalyst for conversation. This is the first Chew on This designed for a teen audience and is part of the IndyTalks series. IndyTalks is a collaboration dedicated to fostering a sense of community through respectful and creative civic dialogue.

“We are happy to be part of this important discussion on technology and the rise of social media that has such a profound influence around the world,” said Dr. Jeffrey H. Patchen, President and CEO, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “It is exciting to know that young people, right here in Indianapolis, have the power and willingness to influence others with ideas and plans they create at this event.”
