What boy or girl is not excited and inspired by the 2,000 year old Chinese legend of the brave and smart, young girl named Mulan? She disguised herself as a boy to join the army in a selfless act to spare her aging father from being forced to become a soldier again.
Children and families have watched the 1998 Disney film over and over again. Now, for the first time at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Mulan Jr. brings the musical story to life on stage.
From June 24-August 3, 2014, Lilly Theater is the place for families to be transported back to ancient China to see the powerful story, colorful characters and costumes, memorable music, and spirited fighting and dancing in a child-friendly, 45 minute, action-packed performance.
In this special adaptation recommended for children ages five and up, special effects ranging from a rocket shooting off to an avalanche crashing down are sure to mesmerize the audience.
The choreography will have you thinking “Broadway” as nationally known, locally-based choreographer Kenny Shepard created the musical staging for six Broadway Junior shows including Mulan Jr.. Instructional DVD’s of Shepard’s choreography are used by children’s theaters coast to coast to help directors produce their own Broadway Junior productions. For The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis however, Shepard blocked brand new dance and combat fighting moves (including Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do and Kung Fu), just for our cast. Some cast and crew members even trained in stage combat techniques for this show.
“The Children’s Museum takes pride in providing meaningful and memorable experiences for families to share together. Our professional cast and crew seek creative ways to introduce families to live theater in an effort to instill a life-long appreciation for the arts.” said Dr. Jeffrey H. Patchen, president and CEO, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “Lilly Theater audiences can always expect the unexpected with the highest levels of fun and entertainment.”
Mulan Jr. compliments and reinforces what families and children learn about the rich culture, heritage and traditions of ancient and modern China when they visit our two newest exhibits: Terra Cotta Warriors: The Emperor’s Painted Army and Take Me There:® China.
