Looking Back, Looking Forward

I was probably in junior high, and I went with my best friend and her family. It was New Year’s Day. Having never been to the Children’s Museum, I had no idea what to expect. We live two hours south of Indianapolis, so the entire way there my friend kept telling me all the different things to do and see while there. The one display she kept talking about was the water clock. The more she tried to explain it to me the more confused I became. I could not figure out what this “clock” made with water was going to look like. However, upon entering the front doors of the museum, I became amazed. I was in awe of how the water was keeping the time. Because we were the oldest among her siblings, her parents let us choose where to go and how much time to spend at each place. I believe we stood there for a good twenty minutes at least just watching the water float through the tubes and keep the time.

Because my friend's family welcomed me as a part of their family for the day and allowed me to visit the museum, this experience is one of the greatest memories have of my friend and I together. It was also the trip that made me fall in love with the Children's Museum. Since this first trip, I have been to the Children's Museum several times with several different groups of people.

We go at least once a year, and my two young boys always have their favorite places to go see. My oldest son, Jeffrie, is three years old, and he loves the Playscape area with the water table and sand box. The first year we were he was just over a year old, and he spent his entire time in the water area. The following year I remember him standing at the sand box and playing by himself nonstop for over thirty minutes! I was shocked that something could keep his attention that long, so we decided to purchase our own sand box for him at home. Casey is twenty-one months old. This year his favorite part of the museum was the Dora and Diego exhibit. He loves animals and of course, baby jaguar. I have a bunch of pictures with him and baby jaguar from our trip this past summer!

I have never taken my family to the museum during the holidays, and I think it would be an excellent day trip to consider. I have been there myself to see the stairs turn into the Yule Slide and view all the beautiful decorations, but my husband and boys have never seen it. I know that my two boys would be in awe of the transformation that takes place during this special time of year. I cannot think of a better place to be when it’s cold outside. The museum would be the perfect place to warm up, and I would love the chance to participate in the scavenger hunt as the Porter family is always looking for a new adventure!
