Measuring Up

Who grew since last year? The answer is revealed at the Yule Slide at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis.

First, we learn about our children's vertical growth. Our oldest son has ridden by himself for several years, and last year, our second child was tall enough to slide solo; his twin sister, however, just missed the cut-off. This year, she'll be thrilled to reach the minimum height mark and try the Yule slide on her own. I imagine we'll stand in line many times to see different combinations race down the twin chutes.

Speaking of standing in line, that tells us a lot about our children's emotional growth. Just a few years ago, we wrangled a double stroller through the line and tried to contain a toddler, too. Now we all walk and (mostly) wait patiently in line. Some year in the future, our mature children will stand in line by themselves, and we will wait to congratulate the winner at the bottom of the slide. While that will be an exciting day, I look forward to navigating the line with them this holiday season, hearing their exclamations about the tinsel-wrapped tree and the sparkly snowflakes dangling from the ceiling. Moments like this remind me to slow down and savor the details in the busy holiday season.
