Old bones

Anytime we drove past The Children's Museum of Indianapolis he would go crazy wanting to go see the dinosaurs because he'd seen the ones on the outside. The rest of the ride home to the north side of Indy he'd ask a million and one questions about the dinosaurs. My husband and I would ask ourselves laughingly "Why did we intentionally ride past there again?"

One weekend we finally made it to the Children's Museum. Our son, Iyanu, was sooooooooo excited as we approached the parking lot. Going in the museum he began to ask all his usual questions about the dinosaurs again. However, this time he was going to get to see them. First we went to see the train. He loved it and wanted to know when the conductor was coming to get our ticket. Then we went to see the dinosaurs. He talked about the teeth and enjoyed the sensory activities. We even stopped to read some of the books and play with the little rubber dinosaurs. As we were leaving the dinosaur area Iyanu asked "So are we going to go see the real dinosaurs?" "Those were the real dinosaurs" my husband told him. We then realized Iyanu expected the dinosaurs to be like the animals at the zoo--alive and breathing. We chuckled and took him back into the dinosaur exhibit and explained that the dinosaurs are very old and these were just their bones because there were no more living dinosaurs.

Iyanu was disappointed and somewhat confused. We took the elevator, which he loves to ride the elevator, and went to see the 500 Indy car. Iyanu was sooooo excited to sit in the car he forgot about the dinosaur disappointment. There was a line for the 500 car so after his first turn he asked to get back in line. So after three turns he was willing to walk away from the car.

Our last main adventure was the Carousel. Iyanu patiently waited for his turn to ride and our day at the Children's Museum was over. Exhausted from the exciting day, Iyanu fell asleep in his car seat by the time we left the parking garage. However, his memory of his first trip to the museum was never forgotten. He talks about the old dinosaur bones every opportunity he can get. A few days later at his grandmother's house, Nee-Nee, she was telling him she couldn't do something because she was too old. Iyanu's response to her was "Like the dinosaurs old bones? Old and dusty?

Every mom thinks that their child is exceptional. We don't necessarily think he's exceptional but he is an exception to the rule. Iyanu is an "old soul"… 3 going on 65… He is now 3 years-old and is full of logical surprises that in a story you'd think I was exaggerating. But once you meet him you'd ask yourself "how does he know that?
