Alebrije

Do you see creatures like this in your dreams? Artist Pedro Linares did, and they inspired him to revolutionize the art of papier mâché alebrijes in Mexico. While their origins lie in naguales, spirit animals and shape-shifting humans with supernatural powers from Mexican mythology, these fantasy creatures are drawn from the artist’s imagination. Pedro’s three sons and grandson have all followed in his footsteps, combining their own artistic ideas with traditional techniques. This special piece was constructed by Pedro Linares at The Children’s Museum for the opening of the Passport to the World gallery in 1986.
