American flag flown on the International Space Station
Humans have always dreamed of traveling into outer space. From the establishment of NASA in 1958 until today, American astronauts carry our imaginations on rockets beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
This small American flag traveled with Captain Kjell Lindgren and crew to the International Space Station in 2022. An astronaut who has visited The Children’s Museum and shared his experiences of living and working in space with visitors, Lindgren brought the flag back to inspire the children of Indianapolis—the next generation of astronauts, scientists, and dreamers.
Lindgren says, “The challenge of becoming an astronaut, and doing the things that we do up here, and the opportunity to explore, and the privilege of working with the incredible teams that we have at NASA and all over the world—it truly is a dream come true.”
