Chiriqui ware jar, Accession #1
Every object in the museum’s collection is assigned an accession number that is used for inventory and to track what we know about it. This round-bottom ceramic jar with painted geometric designs made around 1471–1493 was unearthed in 1906 in Argentina and is distinguished to carry accession No. 1!
Museum Collections Manager Jennifer Noffze explains further, “This object was donated to the collection in 1925 by Mrs. S. D. Spellman. While this wasn’t the first object the museum acquired, it was given the designation of item No. 1 when the actual accessioning occurred. To me, the significance of having this object as item No. 1 emphasizes our founder’s belief that children deserve to have quality objects from around the world in their museum to look at, learn about, and hopefully be inspired by.”
