Over the noise and chaos of a building fire, it’s important for firefighters to be heard. Before the days of walkie-talkies and cell phones, fire departments used “trumpets,” aka speaking horns or megaphones, as part of their everyday equipment to amplify their voices and communicate. This one was used to keep Indianapolis safe in the 19th century.
