Florence Geisler Mineral Collection
Florence Geisler began her mineral collection after graduating from Butler University in 1933 and continued to collect through her 46 years as an Indianapolis Public Schools teacher in math and science. She shared her love for rocks and minerals with her family, as a cofounder of the Indiana Geology and Gem Society, and as a volunteer at The Children’s Museum.
Geisler’s niece, Emily Gleichenhaus, remembers that “Aunt Flossie inspired my early love of geology rock hunting. I went on lots of trips with the Indianapolis Children’s Museum to visit the streams all over Indiana to collect bags full of geodes and fossil specimens. I still have a great appreciation of the geology sections in natural history museums. She also was one of the people who inspired me to love and appreciate the natural beauty of flowers, plants, and animals.”
Niece Amy Everson says, “There were rocks all over her house, on every end table, coffee table, and bookcase—everywhere! Her house was just filled with them. She was always a teacher. Her interests were her life.”
