Ganesh figure
This large figure of Ganesh, or Ganesha, was commissioned in 2015 by The Children’s Museum for the National Geographic Sacred Journeys exhibit and created by the Gana Co., a producer of cast plaster sculptures in Raigad District, India. Large figures such as this are made to be immersed in water during the annual Hindu festival of Ganesha Chaturthi. Ganesh is often called upon for success at the beginning of ventures.
But when this Ganesh was ready to begin its journey to the museum, news came to Director of Collections Chris Carron that our Ganesh might be immersed in a different way.
Carron recalls, “I received an email that our Ganesh was at the port, but they were waiting to load it onto the cargo ship until a monsoon passed!”
Good fortune prevailed, and Ganesh arrived safely in Indianapolis, dry and unscathed.
