When The Children’s Museum became the home of the National Art Museum of Sport (NAMOS) in 2018, it launched new opportunities for families and children interested in sports and athletes, as well as their depiction in art. Learning about this new focus, the LeRoy Neiman Foundation decided to make a gift of 268 of artist Neiman’s works to The Children’s Museum.

Celebrated for his colorful, semiabstract paintings and screen prints of sports stars, horse races, and casinos, LeRoy Neiman became one of the 20th century’s most successful illustrators and was nicknamed the “Father of Contemporary Sports Art.” The foundation’s donation included many original Neiman drawings and one of every sports serigraph available to them.

Describing his own work, Neiman once said, “I’m a storyteller, only I tell my stories in a riot of color. Painters have always told stories—martyrdoms, murders, battles, saints, and sinners—and that’s still what I do.”
