Do you remember the SS Dayrel “Yellow Submarine” at The Children’s Museum? This one-person craft, manufactured in 1976, weighs 2,750 pounds and can travel to a depth of 200 feet for up to 18 hours! Displayed in the What if . . .? gallery beginning in 1992, people could climb a ladder to look into its tower. They could also crawl through a replica or manipulate an interactive wall-mounted version. While that exhibit closed in 2010, many lifelong residents still have fond memories of this submarine that invited them to learn all about exploring the ocean’s depths and still ask its whereabouts.
