The Children’s Museum Donates Birthday Cakes as a “Pop of Joy” for Local Hoosiers

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is kicking off its 100th birthday year by donating 100 birthday cakes to Mid-North Food Pantry. This is the first batch in a year-long campaign to add a pop of joy to birthdays for children and families facing hunger and to raise awareness about food insecurity in the central Indiana community. At food pantries, birthday cake ingredients are not a necessity and therefore are not often donated. The museum plans to fill this gap by providing birthday cake ingredients to families to make birthdays extra special while also encouraging baking as a fun activity they can do together – feeding families emotionally as well as physically.

“Mid-North Food Pantry is looking forward to being the recipients of the first round of Centennial Celebration Birthday Kits. We think families are going to love celebrating their birthdays with a sweet treat. We express our congratulations to The Children’s Museum on making a difference in our community for so many years,” Betsy Morse, Mid-North Food Pantry Board Treasurer.

Now through Dec. 6, 2025, the museum is asking for donations of shelf-stable birthday cake ingredients, including boxes of cake mix, cans of icing, and candles so they can continue to send birthday cake kits to food pantries across Indianapolis. Donating to community food pantries is a great way for kids to learn about youth philanthropy and actively participate in giving back. When kids help others, they practice skills like empathy and generosity, while seeing firsthand how their actions have power to make positive change.

According to Gleaners, more than 1 in 7 Hoosiers are facing hunger, which can significantly affect a child’s ability to reach their full potential. The museum has partnered with Kroger, Acorn Distributors, Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, and the Mid-North Food Pantry to continue to bring attention to the systemic issue of childhood hunger.
