Why Do Fireflies Glow?

Why Do Fireflies Glow?

The answer to this "Never Stop Asking 'Why?'" is courtesy of Dallas Evans, Natural Science Curator.

Bioluminescence is a word that refers to living creatures that make their own light. If you live in Indiana or the Midwest, you have probably seen bioluminescence during the summer when fireflies (or “lightning bugs”) emerge. Fireflies flash from their abdomens, emitting light as a signal to attract a mate. (Firefly larvae also glow, but they glow to warn predators that they taste bad!)

Fireflies are one of the thousands of Earth creatures that emit their own light. There are glowing worms that emit glowing slime, glowing mushrooms, fish with glowing appendages, and even glowing plankton that can light up the ocean!
