Free day FAQs

A free day at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is coming soon and we know you have questions. We’ve gathered some of the most frequently asked questions about free days and answered them all in one place just for you. We hope this information will help you plan your visit to the museum on one of our free days!

1. Is this free for everyone, or just free for kids?
Our free days—Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Juneteenth Jamboree, Fiesta de la Familia, and Christmas Eve—are free for everyone. We do not charge any admission on our free days, but do require advance tickets. We believe the world’s biggest and best children’s museum should be accessible to all.

2. How much is parking?
Parking is free. All-day, every day. We have spots available in our garage and additional parking lots along Illinois Street north of the garage. The Skywalk is connected to the second floor of the garage for safe entry into the museum. Stroller- and wheelchair-accessible ramps and elevators make getting into the museum a breeze!

3. Can I bring my own food?
Yes! While the Food Court has many fresh, hot food choices—including allergy-friendly menu items—you are welcome to bring your own snacks! We allow food in designated areas around the museum—including the Food Court. No food is permitted inside exhibits.

4. What are some “can’t miss” activities?

  • Go round and round the Carousel, which has been in Indiana since 1917. Rides are $2 per person for nonmembers and museum members ride free.
  • Watch CAPCOM Go! The Apollo Story. This 30-minute multimedia experience is in the Schaefer Planetarium and Space Object Theater inside Beyond Spaceship Earth. Pro tip: Arrive 15 minutes early. Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

5. Are there other discount days?
We’re glad you asked! We have $6 First Thursday Nights from 4–8 p.m. the first Thursday of every month. It’s the only time the museum is open to the public and First Thursday evenings are typically not as busy as our free days. Five floors of fun for just $6 is a pretty good deal. Have a wonderful (free) day at The Children’s Museum!
