7 Tips for the Best Experience of Minecraft: The Exhibition

Minecraft: The Exhibition has left The Children's Museum. You can find all of our current exhibits here.

We don’t know about you, but we’re incredibly excited about the arrival of Minecraft: The Exhibition at The Children’s Museum. After all, it makes perfect sense for an exhibit about the world’s best-selling video game to spend some time at the world’s biggest children’s museum. It’s just the perfect match.

The exhibit will be at the museum for a limited time—March 11–Aug. 6, and is included with museum admission. Many people will have this exhibit on their museum bucket list. To help you have the best Minecraft: The Exhibition experience, we’ve gathered some tips that you should know ahead of time.

  1. Prepare for your visit—buy your tickets in advance and familiarize yourself with the exhibit and the game
  2. Expect lines and set expectations for your family
  3. Follow the costume guidelines
  4. Be considerate of others–respect the mobs, follow time limits, and stick together
  5. Try new ways to play Minecraft
  6. Participate in live programming to enhance your visit
  7. Stop by the Pixel8 Pop-Up Shop in The Museum Store
BONUS TIP! Purchase a membership–you know you’ll be back more than once

1. Prepare for your visit

Buy your museum tickets
Minecraft: The Exhibition is included with museum admission. When you buy museum tickets early, you can save up to 20% off the day-of price. Take a screenshot of your digital tickets and have them ready when you walk into the museum. If you’re a member, please have your digital membership card and photo ID ready by the time you get to the museum entry gate. With your digital tickets (or membership card) in hand, you can bypass the Box Office and head directly to the entry gates to start your day!

Familiarize yourself with the exhibit and the game
If Minecraft is a completely new concept for you, take a few minutes to read A Brief Guide to Minecraft on our blog.

We’ve published a digital walkthrough of the exhibit. This will give you the opportunity to know what to expect (and where) in the exhibit. Take a look!

2. Expect lines and set expectations

Anticipation for the arrival of Minecraft: The Exhibition at The Children’s Museum has continued to build since we announced it back in November 2022. We anticipate there will be queue lines to enter the exhibit, as well as a queue line inside the exhibit to play Minecraft

Waiting in line for the exhibit?
There are several signs outside the exhibit with QR codes that link to videos from the exhibit creators and general information about Minecraft. If one or more grown-ups are in your group, one grown-up is welcome to wait in the entry line while the rest of your party explores a nearby exhibit, grab a snack in the Food Court, or visits The Museum Store.

Waiting in line inside the exhibit?
We expect the gaming stations will be popular and there might be some lines while you’re inside the exhibit. There are signs near those queue lines that will tell you more about the Minecraft experience. There are also Biome Explorers—museum staff members, wearing a teal shirt with the museum and exhibit logo—who will lead a variety of activities.

Encourage patience
Before entering the exhibit, establish how much time you’ll dedicate to playing the video game versus other parts of the exhibit. Minecraft: The Exhibition is massive. There’s a lot to take in.

The wait is worth it.

3. Follow museum costume guidelines

Adults and children are welcome to wear Minecraft-themed costumes. Please note that our standard costume policy is the same for Minecraft: The Exhibition:

  • Adults are not permitted to wear costume masks at any time; children may wear a costume mask. Staff may caution mask wearers that they may want to remove their masks if their vision is inhibited.
  • Toy weapons are not permitted. If a toy sword is purchased at The Museum Store, it must be carried by a grown-up.
  • No toy guns allowed in the building at any time.
  • Wearing or otherwise displaying profane, obscene, or injurious language, text, or graphics on clothing or elsewhere on one’s person is prohibited.

You can read our full Code of Conduct policy here

4. Be considerate of others

Be gentle with the mobs
Some of the mob sculptures are set behind barriers. They’re great photo opportunities, but please do not touch these displays. If you do choose to touch the mobs that are not behind barriers, please be gentle, so others can enjoy them throughout the exhibit’s run.

Time limits
There are many gaming stations set up for you to play the Minecraft video game. Please respect the time limits that are set for each station. If there are other families waiting, please allow them to have a turn.

Stick together (adult supervision required)
As stated in our Code of Conduct policy, minor children should not be left unattended. All guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times while visiting the museum, including Minecraft: The Exhibition

5. Play in a new way

In Minecraft: The Exhibition, you have the opportunity to play the video game in several different ways—Xbox, iPad, and computer console. If you’re used to playing Minecraft in one way at home, give a different version a try! If you’re used to playing with an Xbox controller, it could be a fun challenge to try playing with a keyboard or on the iPad. Try to play the game in a new way while you’re here.

6. Participate in live programming

Museum staff, known as Biome Explorers in this exhibit, will be there to help you make connections between the natural world and the world of Minecraft. You’ll even have the opportunity to help them build a structure out of magnetic blocks.

Be sure to visit the Corteva Agriscience STEMLab inside Corteva Agriscience ScienceWorks on Level 4 for a Minecraft-inspired excursion into deep space called Minecraft: Exploring Expolanets. Check our web calendar for program days and times..

7. Visit The Museum Store

We’ve opened the brand-new Pixel8 Pop-Up Shop that will be open throughout the run of Minecraft: The Exhibition. After exploring the digitized world, you can take home a great souvenir!

BONUS TIP—Consider a membership

Finally, consider if a membership might be the right fit for your family. If you enjoy your visit and want more play time, you can apply the cost of your general admission tickets toward a family membership by calling 317-334-4000.

Membership gives families the opportunity to visit almost any time, any day of the year. And, you can take advantage of early entry hours on the first full weekend of every month (open 9–10 a.m. on Member Mornings). Those exclusive hours can really cut the wait times!
