Long Live the Dress: Celebrating Taylor Swift at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (TCM’s Version)

Taylor Swift is a worldwide phenomenon. As of this writing in mid-2024, she holds these impressive records. Here’s just a few highlights. Are you ready for it?

  • Back in 2006, she was the youngest artist to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot Country charts—at just 17 years old
  • She’s the only artist to have won a Grammy for Album of the Year four different times
  • She’s received the most Grammy nominations (seven) for Song of the Year
  • She’s the first artist to claim all 10 spots on Billboard’s Hot 100 in a single week
  • The Eras Tour is the highest-grossing concert tour—ever

She probably just broke another record while you were reading this. All this time, she’s been building something.

Taylor Swift has visited Indianapolis many times

Taylor’s no stranger to Indianapolis. She’s performed here many times over the years:

  • Opened for George Strait in 2007
  • Opened for Rascal Flatts in 2008
  • Performed at the Future Farmers of America (FFA) Convention in 2008
  • Fearless Tour in 2009
  • Speak Now Tour in 2011
  • Red Tour in 2013
  • 1989 Tour in 2015
  • Reputation Tour in 2018

Oh, and that little thing we mentioned earlier called The Eras Tour? It’s coming to Indianapolis Nov. 1, 2, and 3, 2024! We don’t know about you, but we’re pretty excited that she’s returning to the Circle City.

Has Taylor Swift ever visited The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis?

We’d love to have Taylor Swift stop by for a visit while she’s in town. As far as we know, Taylor Swift has never visited The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis* But even though she and our mascot Rex, the Dinosaur have never, ever, ever been formally introduced, you can still find part of Taylor’s story right here at The Children’s Museum.

You can find one of Taylor Swift’s dresses on display inside American POP—our permanent gallery dedicated to all things popular culture. She wore this asymmetrical polka dot dress during her first appearances on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars

In Week 6 of Season 9, she was a guest performer on the celebrity dance competition in both of that week’s episodes. She wore this dress both nights. In Episode 11 (Oct. 26, 2009), she sang Jump Then Fall. D.J. Guthrie and Kersten Todey danced while she performed.

The next episode, Episode 12 (Oct 27, 2009), was an elimination night. Taylor Swift sang Love Story while Cheryl Burke, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Tony Dovolani, Jonathan Roberts, Edyta Śliwińska, and Anna Trebunskaya danced. Two couples—Melissa Joan Hart and Mark Ballas and Louie Vito and Chelsie Hightower—were eliminated from the competition that evening.

She seemed fearless in that dress.

Taylor’s Dancing with the Stars dress has been on display in American POP since the exhibit opened in 2017.

We're all enchanted

If you haven’t noticed from the red scarf on our dinos and her dress in our exhibit, we’ve always been enchanted by Taylor Swift. We know you are, too. You can see her dress, plus all five floors of fun, and our 7.5 acre outdoor sports wonderland (open spring–fall) whenever you visit us!
Just Say 'Yes'

* We have what we call a “Be Cool to Celebrities” policy that states:

“Celebrities come to the museum from time to time for meetings, special events or just to enjoy the museum with their families and friends. Celebrities should be left alone as much as possible during their visit and should not be photographed or asked for autographs, both as a courtesy to them and to help ensure they will be willing to return to the museum in the future.”

So unless a celebrity (or someone from their team) visits us with the intent to promote the visit, we respect their privacy and do not share their visiting habits.
