The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis joins with the Children’s Museum of Houston to say thank you to Hoosier children and their grownups who donated more than 2,500 pounds of school supplies and school uniforms to the children and schools of Houston following Hurricane Harvey.
That natural disaster left tens of thousands of Houston residents homeless, and many schools severely damaged just as they were to begin the new academic school year. The Children’s Museum of Houston quickly stepped up asking for donations to help the Houston Independent School District with necessary classroom supplies and uniforms.
Central Indiana residents responded to the call after The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis publicized it would be a drop-off location for donations from September 2-10, 2017.
“Hoosiers are a caring and compassionate lot and we knew they would rise to the occasion, if asked. Similarly, museums have missions centered around transforming the lives of people, so assisting one of our peer museums in this way was an easy decision,” said Dr. Jeffrey H. Patchen, president and CEO, The Children’s Museum. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims of both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.”
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis collected and shipped 122 boxes of school supplies and uniforms weighing 2, 546 pounds to Texas. In addition, the museum assisted Indianapolis Public School #91 by shipping 21 boxes of school uniforms directly to Worsham Elementary School in Houston. The two schools have a direct relationship and IPS #91 families were eager to help.

It is because of their thoughtful gesture that students affected by Hurricane Harvey will have supplies ready in their hands,” said Tammie Kahn, Children’s Museum of Houston executive director. “How incredible it is that families in Indianapolis stepped in to lend a hand to families in Houston and provided select items which were hardest to find as stores struggled to re-stock. This act of compassion by the community of Indianapolis, under the leadership and organization of The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, serves as a valuable example for future generations to follow. We applaud the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis for continuing to nurture children’s beliefs and aspirations and for helping families cherish their hopes for the future – no matter where they are. Thank you for your unconditional support and for contributing in Houston’s healing.”
