It was decided that at the age of 19 mos. I would have to go to Riley's Children's Hospital in Indianapolis to have corrective surgery. While we were there someone suggested to my mother that she should take me to the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. She did & even though I was too young to remember it, I loved it. I heard that story many times as a young child growing up.
Finally when I was about 9 yrs. old I had my second chance to go. My grandmother was going to a convention in Indianapolis & I begged her to take me so that I could see the Children's Museum and remember it for myself. That day was magical. I carried the memories of the exhibit about disabilities & the doll houses around for about another 10 or 11 years.
By the time I was in my mid twenties I was married with 3 children of my own. I wanted them to see the magnificence of the Children's Museum as well, so I begged my husband to take us on a mini family vacation. It was a wonderful weekend and I was just as awed the second time seeing it as I had been the first time. Our children fell in love with CMI as well so we decided to go back approximately every other year. We now have 5 children in our family so we decided to purchase a membership this year. Our daughter turned 17 on June 10 and decided that all she wanted for her birthday was a trip to the Children's Museum of Indianapolis to meet an Archaeologist. It was a dream come true for her and I know it will have a huge impact on her future. Years from now I will have grandchildren and I will take them to the Children's Museum and I hope they also will be as inspired as our entire family has been to date.
