I have been coming to the Children's Museum since I was 10 years old when my sisters attended Indiana Central College (now U of I). I visited Indianapolis from Illinois to see my sisters in the summer and they always brought me to the museum ... back when it was in the mansion. Then we moved to Indianapolis and we kept a family membership all through my daughter's growing years. Now we get to enjoy another generation at the museum as I buy my sister a grandparent's membership each year to enjoy with her grandchildren. I still visit at least twice per year to watch the little ones discover as I rediscover. My daughter is a senior in high school this year and I will miss sharing the special displays with her when she goes out of state to college next year. She and I love to explore and we would love to participate in the mobile scavenger hunt. It sounds like a fun way to have a special memory for this last summer together.
My daughter and I have done lots of exploring. My husband spends all of his vacation time fishing. So my daughter and I spent many vacations on adventures near and far. My daughter is bilingual (Spanish) so many of our adventures included some unique opportunities for her to practice her language skills. One of our favorite adventures was a summer when we didn't have much money for a vacation and we visited many sites in the city of Indianapolis during my week off of work. We visited the Children's Museum three times that week and for the first time spent enough time on each floor throughout the week to believe we had seen everything. Then on our next visit we had fun finding things that we had missed in our previous extra trips to the museum.
I believe our favorite learning experience at the Children't Museum was watching our daughter in Playscape at an early age. She always came home with a new skill. But, as a teenager with the Power of Children display we had many eye opening discussions about the experiences of the children featured there. This display always prompted a trip to the library to find a book or two to learn more. ...and the generations move on. We'll be getting our own grandparent membership next year when our first grandchild is born to my stepson and his wife. When they visit in May for graduation we'll introduce my daughter-in-law (carrying our grandchild) to the Children's Museum to show her all the fun we will have in future years when they visit.
We love the Children's Museum!
