Warm Up: Hot Lava across the Sky Walk

Equipment Needed:
Sidewalk chalk (if you're playing outside,) towels or construction paper (if you're playing inside)

Setup:

  • Draw some safe “stones” a few feet apart with chalk on your driveway or sidewalk. Or you can draw in the lava instead. If indoors, place small towels or pieces of construction paper on the floor a few feet apart.
  • Use varying distances to challenge your family.

Play/Rules:

  • Move across the “Sky Walk” by hopping and leaping from stone to stone.
  • Use power and balance to avoid the lava!

Game 1 – DInosphere: Gorgos and Duckbills

Equipment Needed:
None

Setup:

  • Have one family member be the Gorgosaurus from Dinosphere.
  • Stand on one leg and have one arm behind their back.
  • The other family members will be the duckbills. They can either squat down real low or go to all fours.
  • Separate the predators and prey on opposite sides of the yard, room, or play area.

Play/Rules:

  • You can do teams like Kids vs Grown-ups or sisters vs brothers, etc.
  • Once the leader says go, it is like tag.
  • The Gorgo must hop on one foot with one arm behind their back and the Duckbill can only move from a low squat or on all fours.

Game 2: Scienceworks: Nutrition in the Farmhouse

Equipment Needed:
Deck of playing cards

Setup:

  • Shuffle cards.
  • Have space to do exercises. You need to pick four different exercises that you can either count or hold for time.
  • Each exercise will be represented by a different suit. For example: Hearts = Jumping Jacks, Spades = Squats, Clubs = Push-ups or plank for time, Diamonds = Knee-Elbow Touches

Play/Rules:

  • Each family member pulls a card. Ace through 5 is a fruit or veggie and requires a low number of exercise to burn off. 6 through 10 is a meat and requires a little more exercise to burn off. Jack, Queen, King are sweet treats and require the most to burn off.
  • The exercise will be determined by the suit of the card drawn and the amount will be the number on the card. J,Q,K will be worth 12.
  • Everyone does the exercises together.
