Greece at a Glance: The Bakery

With the grand opening of Take Me There®: Greece finally here, we wanted to show how years of dedicated research and collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports have helped make this exhibit a reality. In this blog series, we’ll show you how we’ve used the research our staff has done abroad to create this snapshot of life in modern Greece. We’ll also give you a closer look at some of the unique experiences we have in store for you and your family!

The Bakery

In the bakery your family can role play baking and frying traditional Greek baked goods and serving ice cream while you discover some of the traditions behind Greek pastries and sweets.

Try your hand at preparing Greek pastries with our play bakery. Prepare some “baklava” using fabric layers of phyllo, nuts and honey, bake some pretend bread in the “oven,” and “fry” up some “lukumades” to serve with pretend honey and ice cream. Learn how bakers use local ingredients, like honey and nuts, to make delectable desserts.

Watch the video below to see how real Greek bakeries inspired our recreation.

Keep an eye out for a number of feline friends who may be peeking around corners to see the hustle and bustle. (Sorry cat fans. They may look real, but they're also part of the incredible decor).

Baking is closely tied to Greek holidays and traditions. Some pastries are made only for specific holidays, like Christmas or Easter. Learn about how these traditional baked goods connect with other Greek holiday traditions.

To learn more and experience modern Greece for yourself, plan your visit to The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Keep in mind, Take Me There®: Greece won’t be here forever—you never know where Take Me There Airways will go next!
