With the grand opening of Take Me There®: Greece finally here, we wanted to show how years of dedicated research and collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports have helped make this exhibit a reality. In this blog series, we’ll show you how we’ve used the research our staff has done abroad to create this snapshot of life in modern Greece. We’ll also give you a closer look at some of the unique experiences we have in store for you and your family!
Olive Oil Production
In the Olive Shop your family can role play extracting olive oil from olives while learning about the many products Greece produces and the importance of olive oil in Greek culture.
Olive oil has been a cornerstone of Greek culture for millennia, and even today it’s one of the most important parts of Greek cuisine, being present in almost every meal in one way or another. They make lots of it, too—around 350,000 tons a year!
Our pretend olive oil distillery takes you through all of the steps of turning olives into olive oil, like crushing the olives into a paste, malaxing (mixing) the paste, and squeezing the oil out of the paste with an olive press. Then, just place an empty canister under the spout to “fill” it with fresh olive oil. (Be sure to wait for the “glub glub” sound!)
Watch the video below to see how our “distillery” was inspired by traditional Greek olive oil distilling methods.
