With the grand opening of Take Me There®: Greece finally here, we wanted to show how years of dedicated research and collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports have helped make this exhibit a reality. In this blog series, we’ll show you how we’ve used the research our staff has done abroad to create this snapshot of life in modern Greece. We’ll also give you a closer look at some of the unique experiences we have in store for you and your family!
The Plateia
The Plateia, or town square, is a very important part of the typical Greek community. It’s a public meeting spot where people gather to shop, socialize, and debate. In smaller towns and villages they’re also a place for celebrations, feasts, and town meetings to take place.

An extraordinary new experience in this Take Me There gallery—be sure to take in the vibrant energy of Greece under the stars. When the lights dim, the Plateia comes alive with the sights and sounds of Greek nightlife. Watch for this transition every 10 to 15 minutes. While it occurs throughout the gallery, the best view is of the Plaza, where you can see the moon rise and the lights of the shops begin to gradually turn on as the evening turns to night.
Finally, don’t miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in Greek culture through our hands-on and interactive programs that take place in and around the Plateia. Go in-depth with our staff during special programs that give your family the chance to take an even deeper look at the many facets of modern Greek life and culture.

A Taste of Greece: Food Cart
Grab an apron and discover how food is a common thread throughout Greek life and in celebrations. Examine different ingredients and assist in the preparation of a traditional Greek recipe, then take home a copy of the recipe to try at home!
Play a Part: A Big Fat Greek Reception
OPA! Come be a part of the party as you help plan and prepare a Modern Greek wedding reception! Work in teams to make decisions on table decorations, party favors, and dance costumes. Hear about Greek culture and wedding traditions, then join in a celebratory Greek dance!
Make Your Myth: Art Workshop
Make your favorite family myth into a work of art! See how the Ancient Greeks used symbols on pottery and explore how symbols are still used today to tell stories. Work together with your family to design a piece of art that tells a favorite family story. Beyond the Mainland: Island Excursion Come sail away and explore the sights, sounds, and smells of one of the 6,000 Greek islands. Learn what makes these islands unique. Use your senses to explore objects, images, and artifacts from the islands, all while making connections to your own cultural experiences.
