With the grand opening of Take Me There®: Greece finally here, we wanted to show how years of dedicated research and collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports have helped make this exhibit a reality. In this blog series, we’ll show you how we’ve used the research our staff has done abroad to create this snapshot of life in modern Greece. We’ll also give you a closer look at some of the unique experiences we have in store for you and your family!
The Taverna
In our “tavern,” Genetos Taverna, your family can role play being a customer, chef, or server in a traditional rustic Greek restaurant all while exploring Greek cuisine and cooking some (faux) traditional Greek dishes.
Menus have pictures of each dish, how their names are written in Greek, and a list of the ingredients that go into them. In the kitchen, use fabric “ingredients” like rice and tomato to “cook” traditional Greek foods like moussaka, pastitsio, dolmathes, and more.
Watch the video below to see how the rustic charm of a real taverna inspired the quaint exhibit replica.
Lots of the ingredients that go into these foods, like grape leaves, olives, and seafood, are locally sourced. Greece’s agriculture and fishing industries have shaped its culinary landscape. Try thinking about what foods you eat on a regular basis that have locally sourced ingredients.
You can also brew some pretend coffee in the traditional Greek style using a briki, or Greek coffee pot.
To learn more and experience modern Greece for yourself, plan your visit to The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Keep in mind, Take Me There®: Greece won’t be here forever—you never know where Take Me There Airways will go next!
