With the grand opening of Take Me There®: Greece finally here, we wanted to show how years of dedicated research and collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports have helped make this exhibit a reality. In this blog series, we’ll show you how we’ve used the research our staff has done abroad to create this snapshot of life in modern Greece. We’ll also give you a closer look at some of the unique experiences we have in store for you and your family!
The Turtle Rescue Center
With its sprawling coastlines and thousands of islands, Greece is a major destination not just for people, but for sea turtles too. Endangered loggerhead sea turtles nest on beaches, where conservationists collect data on turtle populations and nurse injured turtles back to health. Our replica of the real-life sea turtle rescue center at ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, shows how conservationists and volunteers help protect and monitor sea turtles.

In our recreated ARCHELON center, your family can role play as conservationists helping to ensure the health and safety of endangered loggerhead sea turtles. Collect data by counting and measuring “turtle eggs,” then cover their nest to protect them from predators. Measure, feed, and care for faux injured turtles. Play a game on an interactive touchscreen and use real data to track a sea turtle’s journey from nest to ocean.
Consider things you can do in your community to help protect endangered species and make a positive impact on the environment. Nearby, you can stop by a replica of a family home in the small coastal town of Kyparissi. Learn about daily life on the Greek coast, and see pictures of a Kyparissi family on a digital display to learn about their lives and customs.
