A Home Run for Baseball’s History and Future

Baseball season is in full swing, and whether you’re stepping up to the plate or standing tall in the bleachers, we welcome you to follow the building of America’s pastime at Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience.

Wiese Field, donated by Elizabeth Bracken Wiese and J. Frederic Wiese Jr., creates the setting of the Baseball Experience. Here, children and families can practice pitching, fielding, and batting skills, or they can run the field’s bases surrounded by bleachers and a graphic scoreboard.

The Baseball Experience will display and expose visitors not only to the classic game, but also the health benefits to playing the sport.

“The skills used in baseball—running, throwing, and catching—are fundamental to all children as they grow and develop. Baseball encourages hand-eye coordination, as well as building fitness, agility, and strength. The sport of baseball promotes teamwork, and can be played by children at all skill levels,” says Dr. Joseph O’Neil, developmental pediatrician at Riley Children’s Health.

Dr. O’Neil also points out the immediate opportunities in baseball; the chances involved that give players hope for constant improvement:

“With baseball, I learned that if I swing and miss the first ball, I still had two more chances, if my team doesn’t score that inning, it has a chance in the next inning.  If I miss catching a ball, there will be another one to catch! Each pitch, each swing, each inning, each game, and every season is an opportunity for success.”

The Baseball Experience at Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience will be here in Spring 2018. Follow along with the construction on all our social media channels: Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
