Throughout the year we'll hear from eight bloggers as they share about their family's time in the Riley Children's Health Sports Legends Experience® and how it inspires them to explore these sports back at home.
This post was written by Children's Museum Blog Ambassador Jessica Nunemaker. Follow her posts on the blog or follow her at Little Indiana on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
I’m Jessica Nunemaker and I am a writer, not an athlete, but you won’t see me sitting around, wasting beautiful Indiana weather binge-watching Netflix. Nope. I join my husband, Jeremy, and our two boys, Joey (almost 13) and Jack (8), and we head outside.
Since I’m already busy traveling the state for Little Indiana, my website, book, and PBS segment, we choose to bike the road less traveled. We bring along our bikes and hit the trails, country roads, and parks we find wherever we go.
When we're home, cul-de-sac street hockey is ON. We play year-round, adults versus kids. It is so much fun. If we aren’t playing hockey, we might be at the tennis court, so our oldest son can get in practice before a match or playing soccer in our yard. My husband and our youngest are huge soccer fans.
But, like any good Hoosier, we are also a basketball family. My dad coached basketball for decades so that’s long been a part of my life. He also played dirty against my sister and I just to make sure he’d win. Now, my husband and I play games against our kids—and you better believe I will break out Dad’s moves when they get too good or outgrow me so much I will need that advantage (I’m only 5’2”).
My husband and I are running together. While my run resembles something slightly faster than a walk but not as graceful as a jog, I’m getting into it. He participated in the Spartan Run last year—and has three set to complete this year.
I can trace my first experience with The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis back to when I was a kid. I was competing in a bowling tournament (I’ve always been this cool) so we found ourselves in Indianapolis. We had one hour before the museum closed so we raced through, trying to see everything (the old limestone cave exhibit was my favorite).
Now I head to the museum with my family--and our trips last for hours. At the sports experience, we're pulled from one area to the next. As I settle in as a Blog Ambassador, you'll find a little of this, a little of that, and maybe even a few active games thrown into the mix, so you can keep the sports-themed fun going once you arrive home.
