Mildred Compton and Her Love for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis

This is your museum. And it was theirs too. We’re celebrating the museum’s birthday with some famous quotes from extraordinary people: Kurt Vonnegut, Booth Tarkington, and Mildred Compton all admired and experienced this extraordinary place. They believed in the museum’s impact on the city, the neighborhoods, and the families that fill them.

Determined to expose her two children to as many experiences as possible, Millie brought them to The Children’s Museum. After that visit, the rest is museum history. Millie dedicated her life to this museum. She acted as a guild member, then president, before becoming an official director to the museum for 18 years. She’s the woman responsible for finding the Carousel animals before its final restoration. She established the longest-running haunted house in Indianapolis, and she helped build the five floors of property that remains today as our “five floors of fun”—all this (and then some) that completely transformed this museum into the biggest and best!

Just as a museum director, Millie committed over 35,000 hours of work to the museum. She was a chemist, a wife, a mother, and a tireless leader. Her extraordinary passion for this place exists in our purpose today.

Millie was the initiator and witness to several extraordinary transformations of this museum. And you can be too. To learn more about the Extraordinary Transformations Campaign, start here.
