Saturday Science: Cranberry Engineering

Saturday Science: Cranberry Engineering

Holiday decorations, holiday meals ... cranberries are everywhere this time of year! Let's put them to even better use with a holiday science experiment!

Today's Saturday Science, from Little Bins For Little Hands, uses problem-solving and engineering skills to build cranberry structures.

Materials:

  • A bag of raw cranberries
  • Toothpicks

Process:

  1. Carefully stick a toothpick into a cranberry, then place another cranberry on the other end of the toothpick.
  2. Add another toothpick to one of your cranberries, and another cranberry, and another toothpick, and so on.
  3. Continue this process to build a structure of your choice!

What type of structure did you build? When engineers design buildings, they also have to use problem-solving skills to create sturdy structures! You might notice that some of your best structures use triangles.  This is because in building design, a triangle is a strong shape.  It can withstand a lot of force or weight.  Take a look a bridges next time you are driving around town.  Do you find any triangles?
