FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (January 26, 2023) – The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is excited to celebrate Black History Month on the First Thursday in February with a special performance by Alyssa Gaines, 2022 National Youth Poet Laureate. This program is made possible by Urban Word and sponsored by Voices Corp.
Alyssa is the first-ever Indianapolis Youth Poet Laureate and serves as the Midwest Regional Ambassador. She will perform some of her poetic pieces from her growing body of work that led her to be featured in Scholastic’s “Best Teen Writing,” the Indianapolis Recorder, the Wall Street Journal and NPR, just to name a few. In addition to watching Alyssa perform, she will share how to become an author and poet.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to celebrate Black heritage and achievements in history, science, art and music through storytelling and special activities listed below.
- Community Artist Showcase: Create collaborative art with multiple local artists including members of The Eighteen Art Collective.
- Community Partner Resource Fair: Discover resources available to the community from a variety of organizations.
- Ashley Nora Visiting Artist Workshop: Join Visiting Artist Ashley Nora to observe the many beautiful components of space and create your own artwork using deep colors from oil pastels!
- Achievements from A to Z: Join Storyteller in Residence Portia Jackson as she highlights the amazing contributions of African-American inventors from A-Z.
