Celebrate Black History Month in February at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis 

Enjoy Reduced Admission on First Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (January 30, 2024) – The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is proud to celebrate Black history all year long, but would like to call attention to Black History Month and the First Thursday of February, which falls on February 1st this year from 4 – 8 p.m. On that date, admission is greatly reduced to just $6 per person and there will be additional programming.  

Visitors will learn about Black heritage and achievements in history, science, art and music through storytelling and special activities listed below on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024.  

  • Community Partner Resource Fair: Discover resources available to the community from a variety of organizations.
  • Ess McKee Visiting Artist Workshop: Explore the art of printmaking with 2023-24 visiting artist Ess McKee. 
  • Achievements from A to Z: Join Storyteller in Residence Portia Jackson as she highlights the amazing contributions of African American inventors from A-Z. 
  • Dr. Carlotta Berry Eli Lilly and Company Visiting Scientist Workshop: Tinker with 3D printed robots and learn from Eli Lilly and Company Visiting Scientist Carlotta Berry.
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Lab Program – Soybean Science:  Discover how soybeans can be used to make a variety of products and learn about the work of African American chemist and soybean scientist Dr. Percy Julian. 
  • Jackie Robinson Boundary Breakers Challenge (RSLE Program): Discover how Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. Overcome your own boundaries and learn to be your best on and off the field.
  • Book Signing My Mom is a Construction Manager  with Akilah Darden. 
  • Art Projects with Nathaniel Kyng Rhodes from Eighteen Collective. 
  • Ruby Sound and Light Show: Discover how Ruby Bridges faced the unimaginable in a five-minute film that showcases aspects of her story.
  • Changemakers: Become an everyday superhero and use your power to make a difference!
  • Voices of Hope: Live Theatre Performances: Discover how one inspirational child served as an example of overcoming discrimination and intolerance that made a positive difference in the world today.
  • The Museum Store features many books and toys to celebrate Black History Month. 
  • Freewheelin’ Bikes Workshop on Feb. 9 & 23: Join Freewheelin’ Bikes for their Black History Month special workshops! Explore African American history while using STEM skills to hold your own bike race.
